Buster Keaton - The Complete: Short Films 1917 ...

Buster Keaton (1895-1966) is one of the greatest artists in cinema history. After a very early start in vaudeville with his parents (as The Human Mop), Keaton was as old as the cinema when he began his career in film at the age of twenty-one with Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle. Burlesque yet sensitive, Keaton inspired European surrealists and created the funniest and most astonishing character of the silent era. His short films were whirlwinds of precisely choreographed humour and nonsense, and have been rarely screened in recent years. A new generation are now able to rediscover the timeless appeal of Keaton's comic marvels with this complete collection of short films from 1917-1923. Restored in co-operation with renowned international film institutes, these gems are collected here across four DVDs in the best versions available.

Until Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney opened her studio on Eight Street in Manhattan in 1914 - which evolved into the Whitney Museum almost two decades later - there were few art museums in the United States, let alone galleries for contemporary artists to exhibit their work. When the mansions of the wealthy cried out for art they sought it from Europe, then the art capital of the world. It was in her tiny sculptor’s studio in Greenwich Village that Whitney began holding exhibitions of contemporary American Artists. This remarkable effort by a scion of America’s wealthiest family helped to change the way art was cultivated in America. The Whitney Women and the Museum They Made is a tale in which high ideals, extraordinary altruism, and great dedication that stood steadfast against inflated egos, big business, intrigue, and the harsh realities of today’s world. Flora Biddle’s sensitive and insightful memoir is a success story of three generations of forceful, indomitable women. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Eliza Foss. My Life and Love Are One: Quotations From the L...

This insightful look into one of mankind's favorite artists traces the magic and melancholy of Vincent Van Gogh. Out of Vincent's letters to his brother Theo, as collected by Irving Stone, we have selected an exciting and sensitive series of quotations. The quotations in My Life and Love Are One revolve around three themes - love, art, and turmoil. Centered around emotion and creation, Vincent's writing and philosophy is as expressive as his art. Whether it's soft and swirling, or rash and profound, the transformation of his thoughts into words colors emptiness with the brightest and darkest moments of his life. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jason Zenobia. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/112537/bk_acx0_112537_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

Balthasar Burkhard
48,00 € *

This book presents the many facets of photographer Balthasar Burkhard (1944-2010), showing his self-invention as an artist and tracing the trajectory of the medium of photography in the later half of the twentieth century. Burkhard's work combines a sensitive understanding of the body as sculpture and the photographic image as a canvas, making him one of the pioneers in translating photography as a monumental "tableau" into contemporary art. This comprehensive book coalesces Burkhard's early role as a chronicler of the contemporary art of his time, especially as the main photographer for Swiss curator Harald Szeemann, his conceptual redefinition of photography together with other artists, and finally his emancipation as a photo artist. It accompanies a major retrospective organized by Museum Folkwang in Essen, Fotomuseum Winterthur and Fotostiftung Schweiz, the Museo d'arte della Svizzerra italiana in Lugano and the Balthasar Burkhard Estate in Bern.
