Addressing what might be thought of as standard historical and contemporary subjects with startlingly radical means.... Göran Hugo Olsson's Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 is a collage of archival footage recorded in America, mostly by Swedish journalists, in the era of African-American militancy. The images, accompanied by present-day voice-over reflections from historians, rappers, artists, and veterans of the era's racial politics, offer revelations about events and personalities we thought we understood completely. (The New York Times, reviewing the Black Power Mixtape documentary) "We have much to learn from these visionary organizers who sought to redefine and re-imagine democracy, whose sense of empowerment derived from the belief that the people could be the architects for change." (Danny Glover, from the preface) Featuring material only recently discovered in the archives of Swedish television, here is the Black Power movement as you've never heard it. Based on the award-winning documentary of the same name, Black Power Mixtape presents powerful interviews with Stokely Carmichael, Angela Davis, and others who shaped the struggle of their day. Mixed with the contemporary reflections of leading activists, musicians, and scholars, this book aims to introduce a new generation to the legacy of Black Power. Includes historical speeches and interviews by: Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture), Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Eldridge Cleaver, Bobby Seale, Huey P. Newton, Emile de Antonio, and Angela Davis. Includes new commentary voiced by: Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, Harry Belafonte, Kathleen Cleaver, Angela Davis, Robin Kelley, Abiodun Oyewole, Sonia Sanchez, Bobby Seale, and Questlove 1. Language: English. Narrator: DeVante Johnson, Brad Raymond, Nicholas Tecosky, Jeanette Illidge, Janina Edwards. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/053824/bk_adbl_053824_sample.mp3. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Yacht Rock is an online video series following the fictionalized lives and careers of American soft rock stars of the late 1970s and early 1980s. J. D. Ryznar and Hunter D. Stair devised the series after noticing the incestuous recording careers of such bands as Steely Dan, Toto, and The Doobie Brothers and the singer-songwriters Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. For example, McDonald co-wrote Loggins' "This Is It" and Loggins co-wrote McDonald's band The Doobie Brothers' "What a Fool Believes" and also performed backing vocals for several other 'yacht rock' artists, including Steely Dan and Christopher Cross. Yacht Rock's episodes were "hosted" by "Hollywood" Steve Huey, a legitimate music critic for Allmusic. It should be noted that the term "Yacht Rock" is never used throughout the series by any characters except for by Huey during his introductions, instead, it is always referred to as "Smooth Music".

The music of the 1980s left an indelible mark on pop culture. Thanks to the dawn of MTV and the increasing affordability of synthesizers, a generation of innovative artists took the world by storm to create one of the last great glory eras of pop music. To get to the heart of what made this decade so special, music journalist Jim Beviglia weaves a narrative of the stories behind the pop music phenomenon. Playing Back the 80s: A Decade of Unstoppable Hits features original interviews with more than sixty artists, producers, session players, writers, and others who were directly involved with the most memorable songs of the decade. Among those who appear in Playing Back the 80s are iconic artists like Huey Lewis, Rick Springfield, Kim Carnes, Vernon Reid, Dennis DeYoung, Colin Hay, and Eddie Money telling the stories of how they created, often against imposing odds and in the midst of bizarre circumstances, the unstoppable hits and unheralded gems that still enchant so many fans today. Playing Back the 80s will have music fans pulling their old cassettes out of storage and remembering when and where they heard the songs first. For those who didn't grow up in the 80s, this endlessly fun book will show them what the fuss was all about and maybe reveal a few surprises along the way.

Jonathan Walburgh earned a journalism degree from Texas Christian University in 1997 and has written about entertainment for several Texas newspapers. He has amassed a treasure trove of more than 1,000 printed and recorded pieces of music memorabilia since the late 1980s, and it is from this collection, along with information gathered from outside research, that he accumulated the information included within this work. Pop music in the 1980s was dominated by talented artists such as Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince. But there were many other famous performers during the decade such as Journey, Hall & Oates and Huey Lewis and the News that have been unjustly denied the recognition they deserve. Cannibals and Vixens covers these performers and many more with informative essays celebrating their contribution to the decade's unique musical landscape. From Irene Cara to The Cars, Toto to Bow Wow Wow, and Men at Work to Men Without Hats, these are among the personalities you'll encounter in Cannibals and Vixens on the River Styx.
